The basics of vehicle scrapping

Has your vehicle reached the end of its life? If so, you should get it scrapped at an ATF. (Authorised Treatment Facility) For example, a scrapyard. Vehicle scrapping is for vehicles that are no longer wanted or used so they are sold or given to a scrapyard so that the car and parts can be salvaged and recycled.

When should you scrap your car?

You should probably scrap your car when the repair of your vehicle will cost more than the car is actually worth. You don’t want to be paying for repairs for your car that is less than its parts cost to replace. If you are able to get money from scrapping your car then that would be an added plus.

Due to fuel prices rising constantly all over the UK, you might find that your car isn't fuel-efficient enough to keep on wanting to justify paying the high prices. Now that electric cars are becoming more and more popular every year, people are able to justify the slightly higher price that they cost due to the money that they will save from not having to pay for petrol.

Scrapping your vehicle and parts

If you wish to scrap your vehicle without keeping any of it's parts, you will need to apply to take the registration number off of the vehicle if you want to keep it. To get your vehicle scrapped you will need to go to an authorised treatment facility (ATF) and they will scrap your vehicle for you. It is up to them if you would like to scrap the vehicle completely, retrieve some parts, or repair the vehicle and sell it themselves. You cannot scrap your vehicle anywhere else legally.

When scrapping your vehicle, you will need to give the ATF the vehicle logbook belonging to that vehicle, remember to keep the yellow slip. You will then need to tell the DVLA you have taken your vehicle to an ATF to be scrapped otherwise you can be fined up to £1000.

If your vehicle is scrapped completely, you will receive a certificate of destruction from the ATF within 7 days. The certificate is useful as it is proof that you have legally scrapped your vehicle, if you do not have the certificate, you could be liable for vehicle tax and possibly any penalties that the vehicle may get.

If the ATF doesn’t completely destroy your vehicle but repairs and sells it, you won't get a certificate of destruction.

Payment

If the ATF is paying you for your scrapped vehicle, it is illegal to be paid in cash, (in England and Wales) you have to be paid via bank transfer or a cheque. The amount of money that you will get can fluctuate throughout the year and it also depends on which ATF you go to. The money they will pay you will be set by the ATF depending on the value of your scrap. Some of the factors ATFs will look for with your vehicle will be; what the condition of the vehicle is like, for example, if the vehicle has parts that can be repaired, it is likely that you will get more money for it. They also take into consideration the make and model as certain makes and models will be worth more. They will also check the weight of the vehicle as this is an estimate of how much scrap metal they can get. Again, the price of scrap metal fluctuates a lot so the amount of money you will get can vary throughout the year.
